A September 2009 survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project indicates that, among U.S. Internet users, 33 percent of those aged 18 to 29 use a status update service such as Twitter.

Pew’s finding suggests that young adults are more likely to tweet than those aged 30 to 49, the age segment previously regarded as the core target market for Twitter. Overall, Pew found that 19 percent of online adults used Twitter or another status updating service.
