By Anna Johnson on November 17th, 2009

A survey of 2,000 women Internet users in the U.S. by Q Interactive and Social Media World Forum indicates that women are active social online gamers.

Whilst research by Pew Internet estimates that 50 percent of U.S. women Internet users play online games, Q Interactive’s study yields more details about their usage and preferences.

Among other things, the study reveals that, among women engaged in social media games and applications:

  • Most are loyal to a few social games or applications, with 85 percent regularly using five or fewer games and/or applications, and around 15 percent regularly investing in six or more games/apps at a time.
  • Over half of women social gamers (57 percent) earn or spend virtual currency on a daily basis.
  • Most rely on word-of-mouth to be introduced to new games and apps, with 74 percent using a game or app due to ‘a recommendation’ by family or a friend or because they ‘noticed a friend or family member’s score’.
  • 95 percent mainly use virtual currency to ‘gift’ and/or advance games.
  • Over half (57 percent) regard virtual gifting within games or apps as just as meaningful as real life gifting.
