Weight Loss Booming Online – Traffic Up 27 Percent
By Anna Johnson on March 10th, 2010Compete’s ranking of the dieting, fitness and beauty websites shows that more than 36 million unique visitors logged on to dieting, fitness and beauty websites in January 2010, a 27.2 percent increase over the number of visitors to the category in December 2009.
Diet and fitness websites constituted one of Compete’s fastest growing site categories in January. Probably a combination of lots of people (a) making New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and get fit and (b) wanting to lose those extra pounds added during the Christmas and holiday season.
Among the most popular dieting, fitness and beauty sites and their estimated traffic numbers were:
- Sparkpeople.com: 3.9 million unique visitors
- Weightwatchers.com: 2.3 million
- JillianMichaels.com: 1.97 million (up 55.86 percent from January 2009)
- 24 Hour Fitness: 1.8 million (more than double the visitors in January 2009)
- Ballyfitness.com: 628,374
- Planetfitness.com: 485,926
Social networks also proved a popular starting point for diet and fitness website visitors, with 10.71 percent of the category visitors referred by Facebook.com, and MySpace.com and Twitter.com also ranking among the top 20 sites referring internet traffic to the diet category.
