Visitors Spending Less Time With Online Newspapers
By Anna Johnson on July 7th, 2009According to Nielsen, users spent less time per visit on 17 of the 30 most popular newspaper websites in May 2009, as compared with May 2008.
A chart published by Silicon Alley Insider reveals that the average time spent per visit dropped on four of the top most-trafficked sites, including The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
One take-out from these results is that newspaper sites are becoming less engaging to visitors. On the other hand, if they have also attracted more visitors, it may also be that these extra visitors are less engaged – i.e. more likely to be ‘skimmers’ than ‘readers’ – which has caused the average time spent per user to decline.
