U.S. Newspaper Ad Sales Plummet
By Anna Johnson on June 4th, 2009Newspaper Association of America data shows that total newspaper advertising sales plummeted by 28.28 percent or $2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the same quarter a year ago.
The massive drop is due to sharp declines in both print sales (a decline of 29.7 percent to $5.9 billion) and online sales (a drop of 13.4 percent to $696.3 million).
Classified advertising, in particular, is suffering with classified ad sales falling by 42.32 percent to amount to less than $1.5 billion. The biggest falls were in recruitment (a drop of 67.39 percent), real estate (a drop of 45.55 percent) and automotive (a drop of 43.42).
