U.S. Internet Users Watch 16 Percent More Online Videos
By Anna Johnson on June 10th, 2009Research from comScore shows that U.S. Internet users watched 16.8 billion online videos in April, representing an increase of 16 percent over March. The big jump was largely due to a leap in online videos watched on YouTube.com.
In April, Google owned video websites had the most videos viewed – 6.8 billion videos – with a 40.7 percent online video market share. This was a 15 percent increase over March, with YouTube.com accounting for more than 99 percent of all videos viewed among Google owned sites.
Fox Interactive Media ranked second with 513 million videos (3.1 percent), followed by Hulu with 397 million (2.4 percent), and Yahoo sites with 355 million (2.1 percent).
Meanwhile, nearly 152 million U.S. Internet users watched an average of 111 online videos in April. Google sites attracted a record 107.9 million video viewers, with Fox Interactive Media attracting 58.8 million viewers, Yahoo sites getting 45.4 million viewers, and Hulu getting 40.1 million.
comScore’s research indicates that 78.6 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video in April, with the average viewer spending 6.4 hours per month watching video online. The average online video was 3.5 minutes long.
