U.S. Search Advertising Up By 18.5 Percent in 2010

Internet marketers poured 18.5 percent more money into search advertising in 2010 compared with 2009, according to research by SearchIgnite.

SearchIgnite said its clients increased search advertising by 18.5 percent on a year-over-year basis in 2010. Meanwhile, both it and another firm, Efficient Frontier, report that their customers substantially increased their search ad spend in the final quarter of last year.

Efficient Frontier’s customers increased their spend by 23 percent, while SearchIgnite’s customers invested 35.5 percent more in search advertising during the last 3 months of 2010.

Google is attracting most of the spend. Indeed, Microsoft/Yahoo lost search advertising share to Google in 2010. According to Efficient Frontier, Google’s share grew from 74 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 78.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010. SearchIgnite said Google’s share of spend among its clients rose from 80.2 percent in Q3 2010 to 82.6 percent in Q4 2010.
