U.S. Online Advertising Surpasses Newspaper Ad Spending
By Anna Johnson on January 14th, 2011According to eMarketer, 2010 marks the first year that online advertising exceeded spending on newspaper ads.
Whilst total newspaper advertising reached $25.7 billion in 2010 (down 6.6 percent from 2009) and advertising in print newspapers alone dropped to $22.8 billion, online advertising grew by 13.9 percent to reach $25.8 billion.
eMarketer expects the gap between newspaper and online advertising to widen in 2011. The firm expects newspaper spending to drop to $24.6 billion in total ($21.4 billion for print alone) while online advertising will reach $28.5 billion.
