According PriceGrabber’s report ‘A Deep Dive into Online Holiday Spending Trends’ the average U.S. Internet shopper will spend $845 on Christmas and holiday gifts this year.

Based on PriceGrabbers’s survey of online shoppers, most online shoppers plan to spend more on gifts during the 2010 holiday season than they did last year. Of those who plan to buy Christmas and holiday gifts this year, 66 percent intend to spend $500 or more, compared with only 59 percent of consumers who spent $500 or more on gifts in 2010.

The average Internet shopper plans to spend 57 percent of their gift budget online, 40 percent in brick-and-mortar stores and 3 percent from a mobile phone. They also plan to monitor any ‘price wars,’ with 80 percent of consumers intending to monitor price wars on their favorite products to ensure they get the best deal.

PriceGrabber expects hot competition among vendors of popular products, especially in the categories of smartphones, e-readers and tablet PCs.

Indeed, the company predicts tablet PCs to be one of the most popular technology gifts this year. In October 2010 the number of searches on PriceGrabber comprising the keyword ‘tablet’ was more than triple (330 percent) that of last year. The keyword ‘tablet pc’ has increased in popularity by 76 percent.

Along with the Apple iPad – and purely based on visits to, and searches on, its site – PriceGrabber expects the Sony VAIO® Tablet PC, Toughbook® 19 Tablet PC and Asus® Tablet PC to be popular tablets.
