U.S. Ecommerce Spending Down By 2 Percent in Q3 of 2009

According to comScore, Inc. U.S. online retail spending totaled $29.6 billion in the third quarter of 2009, down 2 percent versus year ago. This is the first time there has been negative year-on-year ecommerce spending growth in consecutive quarters.

comScore’s estimates of quarterly year-on-year ecommerce growth since the first quarter of 2007 are as follows. comScore’s definition of retail ecommerce specifically excludes travel, auctions, cars and large corporate purchases.

  • Q1 2007: 17 percent
  • Q2 2007: 23 percent
  • Q3 2007: 23 percent
  • Q4 2007: 19 percent
  • Q1 2008: 11 percent

  • Q3 2008: 6 percent
  • Q4 2008: -3 percent
  • Q1 2009: 0 percent
  • Q2 2009: -1 percent
  • Q3 2009: -2 percent
