U.S. Ecommerce Sales Rise 3 Percent in Q4 2009
By Anna Johnson on February 18th, 2010In the fourth quarter of 2009, U.S. retail ecommerce sales were $39 billion, up 3 percent over those in the final quarter of 2008.
Based on comScore data, total retail ecommerce sales for 2009 were $129.8 billion, slightly below the 2008 figure of $130.1 billion. Nonetheless, the 3 percent rise in ecommerce spending in the last quarter of 2009 indicates a possible rebound from largely negative growth throughout 2009.
Ecommerce spending was flat in the first quarter of 2009, and was -1 percent and -2 percent in the second and third quarters respectively.
comScore found that the growth in ecommerce spending was largely due to more online buyers, rather than online buyers buying more. The research company also found that the biggest online retailers, led by Amazon and Walmart, gained market share at the expense of small and mid-sized online retailers, and that free shipping was a factor in over 40 percent of ecommerce transactions during the holiday season.
