U.K. Online Sales Reach 10 Percent of All Retail Sales in 2009

By Anna Johnson on March 3rd, 2010

U.K. shoppers spent more online than shoppers elsewhere in Europe, according to the Centre for Retail Research. In fact, in 2009 online sales accounted for 10 percent of all retail sales in the United Kingdom.

The average U.K. shopper spent GBP 1,102 in 2009 and overall online spending in the U.K. is expected to reach GBP 43.7 billion in 2010.

Interestingly, more men in the U.K. shop online than women: there are an estimated 12.9 million male online shoppers, compared with 10.3 million female online shoppers, in the United Kingdom. Also, Brits aged 50 and over are also a significant online demographic. Data from Millennium found that more than a quarter of the 400 people aged over 50 it surveyed shopped for groceries online, with over half spending more than GBP 150 per month.

According to U.K. voucher codes site VoucherSeeker, the recent recession spawned a new kind of British shopper – someone intent on doing extensive research to get the best deal, including finding discount vouchers and discount codes to reduce the cost of purchases ranging from electrical goods to groceries.
