Twitter Users Mostly Want News

By Anna Johnson on October 27th, 2009

A study by Internet advertising network Chitika indicates that Twitter users are mostly looking for news, above content relating to movies, technology, medical and other subjects.

After categorizing the sites that get links from Twitter, Chitika found that over 28 percent of all traffic went to news sites. Next, in terms of popularity, were movie sites with 22.56 percent of Twitter traffic, followed by technology and gadget sites with 13.39 percent, and medical sites with 7.98 percent. The remaining traffic (27.58 percent) went to ‘other’ (miscellaneous) sites.

Chitika observes that the interests of Twitter users contrast with those of Facebook users. While 18.25 percent of Facebook users go to news sites, these sites are less popular destination sites than technology sites (33.22 percent) and lifestyle sites (18.29 percent).

Also interesting, from an Internet marketing perspective, is that the fourth most popular type of destination site for Facebook users is ‘how to’ sites (4.55 percent of traffic), while miscellaneous sites are fifth most popular (25.69 percent).
