Twitter is used by 8 percent of U.S. Internet users and 6 percent of all Americans, according to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

Of those who have joined Twitter, Pew finds that 36 percent visit the site once or a few times per day, 17 percent do so 1-5 times per week, 7 percent do so once every few weeks, 20 percent visit less often, and 21 percent never check Twitter at all.

What do Twitter users Tweet about? Here’s what Pew reports:

  • 72 percent of Twitter users Tweet about their personal life, activities or interests. 19 percent do so once a day or more.
  • 62 percent Tweet about their work life, activities or interests, with 12 percent doing so on a daily basis.
  • 55 percent share links to news stories (12 percent do so at least daily).
  • 54 percent Tweet humorous or philosophical observations about life (16 percent of Twitter users do so daily).
  • 53 percent Retweet others’ posts (18 percent do so daily).
  • 52 percent send direct messages to other users (11 percent do so daily).
  • 40 percent share photos (12 percent do so daily).
  • 28 percent share videos (8 percent do so daily).
  • 24 percent Tweet their location (7 percent do so daily).

Pew’s findings are based on a November 2010 survey of 2,257 U.S. adult Internet users.
