Twitter to Let You ‘Buy’ Twitter Followers

By Anna Johnson on September 28th, 2010

Twitter plans to sell ‘Promoted Accounts’ whereby advertisers will be able to promote their brands alongside Twitter’s ‘Who to Follow’ suggestions.

Just as Twitter currently aims to suggest people to follow based on your Twitter profile and who you already follow, so too will Twitter aim to suggest only ‘relevant’ advertisers or brands to follow.

Presumably, Internet marketers big and small will be able to buy ‘Promoted Accounts’ and although pricing details have not yet been released, the cost may vary based on how relevant and targeted a Promoted Account will be to certain users.

For example, it might make sense for Twitter to use an auction model whereby advertisers can bid to appear on certain kinds of users’ accounts.
