Twitter Means Traffic For TechCrunch
By Anna Johnson on June 19th, 2009TechCrunch has revealed that 9.7 percent of all traffic to TechCrunch.com comes from Twitter. This reflects a 1.8 percent increase over the percentage of traffic derived from Twitter six months ago.
Based on this percentage, Twitter is now TechCrunch’s second largest source of outside traffic after Google.
Based on the 30 days to June 14, TechCrunch’s Google Analytics numbers showed its top sources of traffic to be as follows:
- Google: 32.7 percent
- Direct: 22.7 percent
- Twitter: 9.7 percent
- Digg: 7.4 percent
- Techmeme: 2.4 percent
- Other: 25.1 percent
A large portion of TechCrunch’s traffic comes from TechCrunch’s Twitter account, which has nearly 715,000 followers. TechCrunch’s Twitter account is also one of those suggested to new users.
Also, based on TechCrunch’s use of the custom short link service, Awe.sm, TechCrunch has found that about 73 percent of its Twitter traffic comes from people clicking on an http://tcrn.ch short link, with another 23 percent coming directly from Twitter.com via other short links such as bit.ly.
TechCrunch points to retweeting as being a major way to syndicate content across Twitter and, in turn, a major source of traffic.
