By Anna Johnson on September 8th, 2010

Twitter now has over 145 million registered users. While the majority of users (78 percent) access the service via the Twitter.com website, a substantial 46 percent access it from mobile devices (there is overlap because many Twitter members access the service from both PC and mobile device).

Based on a recent blog post by Twitter’s co-founder and CEO Evan Williams, total mobile usage of Twitter has grown by a massive 62 percent between mid-April 2010 and September 2010.

What’s more, 16 percent of all new Twitter users begin using the micro-blogging service with a mobile device, compared with just 5 percent before Twitter released its first Twitter-branded mobile client.

Evan Williams says that 46 percent of active Twitter users participate on the platform via mobile.

Here are the top 10 Twitter applications by the percentage of unique users:

  1. twitter.com: 78 percent
  2. m.twitter.com: 14 percent
  3. SMS: 8 percent
  4. Twitter for iPhone: 8 percent
  5. Twitter for BlackBerry: 7 percent
  6. TwitPC: 4 percent
  7. TweetDeck (both mobile and desktop): 3 percent
  8. Echofon (both mobile and desktop): 3 percent
  9. Google Friend Connect: 2 percent
  10. UberTwitter: 2 percent
