ToysRUs Buys Toys.com For $5.1 Million
By Anna Johnson on March 2nd, 2009Who said big domain name sales were dead? Last week, ToysRUs beat out its rivals to buy toys.com at auction for a massive $5.1 million.
Not a bad result for the auction house. Before the first auction of toys.com was halted by the bankruptcy court a few weeks ago, it had accepted Faculty Lounge’s bid of $1.25 million for the domain name.
It seems Faculty Lounge had no chance in this new auction (or just didn’t want to pay so much). Once the bidding reached $3 million, it all came down to a bidding war between ToysRUs and domain holding company National A-1, which owns such domains as free.com, boys.com, girls.com, and divorce.com.
Auction observers could have been forgiven for thinking they were watching a grand slam tennis final between two closely matched tennis pros. Apparently ToysRUs and National A-1 duked it out for hours until ToysRUs claimed the domain name.
