Top Level Domain Names Up 7 Percent, Surpassing 196 Million Domains in Q2 2010
By Anna Johnson on November 30th, 2010The number of top level domain names (TLD) registered worldwide surpassed 196.3 million in the second quarter of 2010, according to VeriSign, Inc.
Based on VeriSign’s most recent ‘Domain Name Industry Brief’, the 196.3 million global base of domains reflects a 2 percent increase over the number of TLDs registered in the first quarter of 2010. What’s more, domain name registrations grew by 12.3 million, or 7 percent, over the number of registrations during the second quarter of 2009.
The sum total of .com and .net domain names reached 101.5 million in Q2 2010. New .com and .net registrations totaled 7.9 million during the second quarter, up 13 percent over last year.
The combined .com and .net renewal rate for the second quarter was 73.2 percent, slightly higher than the 72.1 percent renewal rate in the first quarter of 2010.
