MarCom Launches as The Web 2.0 Community For Marketers

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Could MarCom (mar.com) be the marketing community’s answer to Techmeme? TechCrunch thinks not… but I’m not sure that’s the aim of MarCom anyway. MarCom doesn’t claim to be a news aggregrator so much as a news and social community for marketers.

Indeed, MarCom describes itself as a ‘comprehensive web 2.0 community for offline and online markers with ranked news, articles and advice.’ According to its ‘about’ blurb, MarCom will allow marketers to network with other online marketers, and get the latest news related to digital marketing, search engine optimization and advertising, social media marketing, online advertising, blogging, affiliate marketing and more.

Sylvie Fortin Attacks Marketers Over Further Sins

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

“This report comes out at a time when the internet marketing community is quickly degrading into a dog-eat-dog world where good decent people are pushing the limits of the market’s endurance with shoddy products, lazy tactics, and borderline illegal methods.”

– Sylvie Fortin

Pretty strong, huh?

Sylvie Fortin, president and founder of Workaholics4Hire, has
just released Part 2 of her 3-part report, Internet Marketing
Sins.

As in Part 1, Sylvie is brutally honest… but even I had to

wince at some of what Sylvie said in this Part.

Fortunately, there is some light relief. The section on Lazy Ass
Marketers is pretty funny.

Definitely worth a read. And even though I don’t think Internet
marketing is quite so bad as indicated by the above quote, it’s
worth doing our bit to improve practices in this community - as
both marketers and customers.

StomperNet Delays Launch of Stomping The Search Engines 2… Affiliates and Customers Angry

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

In a public relations disaster, StomperNet’s website was DOWN when both the company and its numerous affiliates sent thousands of potential customers to the site in order to get their free copy of the Stomping The Search Engines 2.0 home-study DVD-ROM course.

In a somewhat risky move, StomperNet is freely giving away its highly rated search engine optimization (SEO) course - originally priced at $497 - in the hope that those who order will end up subscribing to StomperNet’s Internet marketing journal, The Net Effect.

Customers also get a free copy of The Net Effect when they order Stomping the Search Engines 2, but will start paying $39 per month for the second issue of the journal and for all subsequent issues.

At a time when the Internet marketing community is sick and tired of “servers crashing” and ploys to create artificial scarcity, the technical issues which caused StomperNet’s website to go down couldn’t have come at a worse moment.

StomperNet insists its problems were real and that there is no intention to create the impression of scarcity since the company plans to fill every order.

“We’re not kidding when we say this is not a scarcity play - we want to get this stuff into as many hands as possible!” Brad and Andy told affiliates in an email today, “We’re going to FILL EVERY ORDER.”

As an affiliate I personally feel let down and embarrassed - especially since I am one of those who have criticized Internet marketers over servers crashing during product launches. However, I have no reason not to believe StomperNet when they say this was a genuine mistake.

As a result of the debacle, StomperNet has delayed the launch of Stomping The Search Engines 2 until Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 2pm EST.

You can, however, go to the site NOW and sign up to be notified as soon as the course is available.

Either way, I still recommend that if you want to get tons of traffic to your website via SEO, you should definitely pick up a free copy of the Stomping The Search Engines 2.0 course.

Thursday 2pm EST is:

  • Thursday 11am in Los Angeles
  • Thursday 7pm in London
  • Friday 4am in Sydney
  • Friday 3am in Tokyo

Depending on when you read this, this is only a few hours away.

One Of The Biggest Lies In Internet Marketing

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Here is one of the biggest lies being either purposely or accidentally perpetuated within the Internet marketing community: you can and SHOULD be able to make a fortune without spending much or any money to do so.

It’s a lie.

Don’t get me wrong. An Internet based business is certainly one of the cheapest businesses to set up. And, compared with traditional, “bricks and mortar” businesses, Internet businesses can achieve returns on investment (ROIs) that are nothing short of spectacular. Both in terms of the increase in value of the business and in terms of ongoing profits.

But the idea that you don’t have to spend much or anything on your business - and in particular, on marketing - is just not true.

The truth is that the “big boys” in Internet marketing invest in marketing. They don’t rely on approaches that are likely to attract web visitors and subscribers in the handfuls… they invest in approaches that generate visitors and subscribers by the hundreds and thousands.

This includes investing in pay-per-click advertising… newsletter advertising… off-line advertising… paid press release distribution… paying people to write and distribute articles and engage in various back-linking strategies… sharing generous commissions with joint venture partners, and so on.

Again, that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune. Or even to spend a lot when you’re starting out. But to really grow your business, be prepared to invest a few hundred to a few thousand dollars on marketing per month AT LEAST.

And here’s the good news. If you’ve been beating yourself up over why everyone else seems to be able to generate such amazing volumes of website traffic, build such enormous lists, and make so much money… while you’ve continued to struggle… now you know why: No, everyone else is NOT smarter than you… they’ve probably just spent more money on acquiring visitors, subscribers and ultimately, customers.

Sure, there ARE cases of Internet marketers who have not spent much and have achieved huge success with cheap viral marketing, or have fortuitously hooked up with a joint venture partner who has, or has access to, a huge list. But most of us have to buy our ways in.

And, let’s be honest here, no business that has been around for any length of time gets to survive, let alone thrive, without investing in marketing.

So stop thinking you should be a miracle worker and start working out how much you can invest and what you should invest it on.
