Ad Network Targets Small-To-Medium Size Businesses

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Ad network Federated Media is hoping to endear itself to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with a pair of initiatives aimed to make it easier for SMBs to advertise online.

Firstly, FM is extending its self-serve ad platform to SMBs, which will give them access to FM’s premium content, and give them more control over their ad campaigns.

Secondly, FM is launching its ‘Online Marketing Idea Exchange’, a virtual community for business owners to discuss advertising issues with each other and ask developers, vendors and FM questions.

Tips For Getting Directory Links

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Good article by P.J. Fusco on getting backlinks from web directories. Ms Fusco explains that obtaining backlinks from the RIGHT directories is still a legitimate link building practice for the purposes of search engine optimization (SEO).

For one thing, directory submissions typically give you control over the anchor text used to link to your site. For another thing, directories are not only fairly easy to find, but also allow and WANT you to submit your site to them.

Just be sure to focus only on directories that are RELEVANT to your business - whether they are general, topical, niche or local/regional directories. Indeed, Ms Fusco suggests you take your time when evaluating a directory and to look for these signs:

  • .edu and .gov backlinks;
  • An aged domain;
  • Lots of pages indexed by the search engines;
  • Good PageRank flow-through to the listing pages; and
  • Fewer than 100 links per listing page.

Similarly, she gives some solid tips for what to AVOID in a directory. You want to steer away from directories that:

  • Are NOT relevant to your website;
  • Are really just thinly veiled link farms;
  • Contain links to “bad neighborhoods”;
  • Have excessive broken links; and
  • Feature numerous pop-up or pop-under ads.

Check out Ms Fusco’s article for more tips, including a list of other things to avoid when evaluating a directory.

Microsoft-Yahoo Takeover Still Possible

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

If Carl C. Icahn seizes control of the board of Yahoo, Microsoft’s purchase of the No. 2 Internet search company could be back on the agenda.

In co-ordinated statements released to the media over the weekend and on Monday respectively, Mr Icahn and Microsoft signaled that the companies would renew acquisition talks if Icahn wins his proxy fight and takes control of the board.

So what’s standing in Icahn’s way? Yahoo’s largest investors need to vote on whom they think should remain on, or join, the board. Should the vote go Icahn’s way the current board will be replaced by Mr Icahn and his supporters, while Yahoo-founder and current CEO, Jerry Yang, will be out the door.

Microsoft’s interest in buying Yahoo - or simply its search technology - coupled with its plans to purchase semantic search engine Powerset, seem only to highlight the company’s frustration with being a distant third in both the search and search advertising markets.
