Steve Jobs Reveals 5 Keys To Apple’s Success

By Anna Johnson on July 21st, 2010

Business and technology pundits are quick to theorize about why Apple and its CEO, Steve Jobs, have been so successful in recent years, but what keys does Steve Jobs himself attribute to Apple’s success?

Steve Jobs recently hosted a press event and GigaOm’s Om Malik was on hand to distil some of Jobs’ explanations for Apple’s success. I’ve elicited slightly different lessons from what Jobs said during the event, but feel free to watch the video and derive your own insights (see link below).

Here are 5 keys to Apple’s success I drew from Steve Jobs’ comments:

  1. The best ideas come from healthy, vigorous debate. Apple employees engage in hearty debates in order to come up with the best ideas.
  2. There are no short cuts: hard work is necessary to produce great ideas and products.
  3. Identify and focus on the core competency that what will drive your competitive advantage; forget about trying to be the best at everything else. According to Steve jobs, Apple realized that, rather than make processors or hard drives, the company’s strength lay in ‘making software for iPods, PCS and the cloud and making them work together.’
  4. Love your customers and take care of them.
  5. Focus on the long-term, rather than tactics or incidents that, in Apple’s case, may cause short-term stock price fluctuations.
