Spam Volume Has Doubled in Past Few Weeks
By Anna Johnson on May 21st, 2009Yes, that’s weeks. Research by German email security provider, eleven, indicates that the daily volume of spam has doubled in just the past six weeks.
After noticing a substantial increase in spam in the second half of April, eleven noticed an even more dramatic increase from 5 May 2009. Between 1 April and 18 May 2009, spam grew by 102 per cent overall.
The enormous increase in spam is something of a rebound since Internet service providers cut off notorious spam host, McColo, in November 2008. While this cut-off saw global spam levels drop by more than 60 per cent, it was only a matter of time before spammers regrouped and found alternative means for getting their messages distributed.
Robert Rothe, founder and CEO of eleven, says that the volume of spam is getting to the point where it may overload and even cause the temporary collapse of email infrastructures.
