Social Networks and Blogs More Popular Than Email?

By Anna Johnson on March 21st, 2009

Research by Nielsen Online indicates that more people in the United States and several other countries use social networks and blogs than email.

Nielsen says that using search engines and visiting ‘destination’ websites were still the most popular online activities, their ‘reach’ exceeding 85 percent in December 2008 compared with the same time, the year before.

Social network and blog use, however, had a reach of 66.8 percent in December 2008 (it was 61.4 percent in December 2007) compared with email, with a reach of 65.1 percent (it was 62.5 percent the year before).

Not sure how indicative Nielsen’s research is, given their measure of ‘reach’ but I wouldn’t be surprised if, among consumers (as opposed to business users), social media has become more popular than email.
