Social Networks: 1 In 2 Social Gamers Use Virtual Currency

By Anna Johnson on February 28th, 2010

Research into the habits of 1,202 social gamers by PopCap Games reveals that more one in two consumers (53 percent) who play games on social networks (e.g. Facebook MySpace) have earned and/or spent virtual currency in a social network.

Only 28 percent have purchased virtual currency with real-world money and only 32 percent have purchased a virtual gift. Nearly a third (32 percent) of social gamers say they’re likely to purchase virtual items with real-world currency.

Meanwhile, a quarter (25 percent) of social gamers say they’ve been misled by an ad or other “special offer” tied to a social game they’ve played.
