Social Media Users Follow Only Five Brands

Research by Cone indicates that while social media users are increasingly engaging with brands online, they tend to follow or ‘fan’ an average of just 4.6 major brands.

According to the 2010 Cone Consumer New Media Study – a survey of 1,050 adults in the U.S. – 86 percent of consumers are interested in following a brand online, up from 78 percent in 2009.

Before they do so, however, they take the mindset of ‘what’s in it for me’ with 77 percent of social media users looking for free products, coupons or discounts from companies online.
