Smartphones Dominate Mobile Browser and App Use
By Anna Johnson on October 21st, 2010With smartphones now responsible for the bulk of U.S. mobile browser and application use – and more and more people wanting to access the Internet via their mobile devices – the writing is on the wall for ‘feature phones’ (i.e. non-smart phones).
Sure, smartphones still account for less than a quarter of the U.S. mobile market, but comScore estimates that they accounted for 55.5 percent of mobile browser use in the three month period ending August 2010, up from 41.4 percent in the same period last year. Additionally, smartphones comprised 60.4 percent of total application use, up from 43.6 percent last year.
According to comScore, the migration from features phones to smartphones represents a ‘watershed moment’ for the mobile content and advertising industry, and marketers should ‘shift their focus towards developing with primarily these devices in mind.’
No question, the rise in smartphone Internet access has been helped by the introduction of devices such as Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry, and handsets running Google’s Android operating system.
