Skype Gets 13 Percent of International Calling Market

By Anna Johnson on February 3rd, 2010

In what should be a huge wake-up call to the telecommunications industry, VoIP telecommunications provider Skype achieved 13 percent of the international calling market in 2009, with Skype-to-Skype calls accounting for 54 billion minutes out of 406 billion. This reflects a 50 percent jump over Skype’s share in 2008.

According to TeleGeography, growth in international call volume from telephones has slowed from an average 15 percent per annum growth rate over the past 25 years, to just a 8 percent growth rate in the last couple of years.

Skype, meanwhile, has seen its call volume swell during the same period. Skype-to-Skype call volume grew 51 percent in 2008, and is projected to grow 63 percent in 2009, to 54 billion minutes.
