People Want Their Internet TV
By Anna Johnson on May 6th, 2009A study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) reveals that about half of all prospective television buyers are likely to buy an Internet-connected television in the next year.
The CEA’s research, conducted in December 2008, reveals that 48 percent of U.S. Internet users would use an Internet-enabled television to find out more information about upcoming shows and identify a song that played during the show. 44 percent would also use the Internet to find out more information about the actors in the shows they’re watching.
Interestingly, the study found that most U.S. adults are already online while watching TV. 30 percent of adults usually or always surf the Internet while watching television, and another 32 percent sometimes do the same.
Furthermore, consumers are increasingly willing to shift their online activities to the TV. 62 percent see themselves watching online video on their TV sets, 59 percent plan to check online weather updates on their TVs, and 57 percent intend to play online games on their Internet-enabled TVs.
‘Consumers are already using the Internet while they watch TV. The next frontier is to create a seamless experience bringing the two together,’ said Shawn DuBravac, CEA’s economist and director of research.
