Opera Unite Lets You Host Websites, Run Chats, Share Content… All From Your PC
By Anna Johnson on June 17th, 2009Oslo, Norway based browser maker Opera has launched ‘Opera Unite’, a revolutionary new technology that turns any computer into both a client and a server.
By implementing Opera Unite you’ll be able to turn a desktop or laptop PC into a server that can serve content to other computers connected to the Internet, without the need for third-party servers.
Opera Unite, which aims to make serving data as simple as browsing the web, is available in a special version of the Opera 10 desktop browser from Opera Labs. Opera Unite services run directly in the browser.
Among other things, Opera Unite will enable you to:
Securely share files from your PC without first having to upload those files. This includes photos, MP3s and other kinds of files.
Run entire websites from your personal computer. That’s right, you can potentially host a website on your PC, as well as use it as you normally would. (Not something I would advise though…)
Run ‘The Lounge’ – a self-contained chat service on your computer.
Run the ‘Fridge’ on your PC – a ‘virtual refrigerator’ on which you, friends, family and colleagues can securely and privately exchange notes.
Announcing Opera Unite, Opera’s CEO, Jon von Tetzchner said that the technology “decentralizes and democratizes the cloud.”
