Online Microlender Kiva Pilots U.S. Small Business Program

By Anna Johnson on June 24th, 2009

Microlending facilitator, Kiva, which allows people to lend small amounts of money to entrepreneurs in third world countries, will pilot a program aimed at enabling loans to small businesses in the United States.

The pilot program will begin with 45 U.S. businesses in New York and California, ranging from baked goods delivery services, to child care services, to taxi drivers.

Kiva will be assisted by two field partners in both states – ACCION USA, a non-profit microfinance institute, and Opportunity Fund, a community development fund that works in California.

Microlending has become very popular in India where it was founded.
It have produced many success stories. Hopefully, it will have the

Thanks for your comment David! Microlending is a great concept that should theoretically apply anywhere. We’re also proud lenders to Kiva.org :)
