Online Classifieds Decimate Newspapers

By Anna Johnson on May 26th, 2009

According to new data from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, the number of U.S. adults who have visited an online classified website has increased from 22 percent in 2005 to 49 percent in 2009.

Similarly, the number of U.S. adults who visit online classified sites on a daily basis has jumped from 4 percent in 2005 to 9 percent in 2009.

The increased popularity of online classifieds has almost certainly come at the expense of newspaper classifieds. Pew’s research indicates that revenues from newspaper classifieds have plunged 49 percent from almost $20 billion in 2000 to under $10 billion in 2008.
