Research by Frank N. Magid Associates shows that around 12 percent of – or more than one in 10 – Americans bought a virtual item in the past year.

In fact, the virtual goods and currency market is predicted to be worth $1.8 billion this year, with social network gamers and iPhone owners leading the charge. 27 percent of virtual goods buyers are social network gamers, while 28 percent of virtual goods buyers are iPhone owners.

PC and handheld console gamers are also significant virtual items buyers (19 and 22 percent of virtual goods buyers respectively).
