Mobile Phone Users Prefer News and Information on Their Mobiles
By Anna Johnson on December 16th, 2010Maybe it’s no surprise but Handmark research shows that mobile phone users prefer their mobile devices over desktop PCs for accessing news and information. What’s more, when it comes to shopping, they view mobile devices as second only to desktops for buying products.
Based on its survey of more than 300,000 mobile consumers, Handmark reports that more than 30 percent of mobile consumers view mobile technology as the most important medium for accessing breaking news, compared with 29 percent who prefer the desktop web, 21 percent who prefer television, and just 3 percent who favor newspapers.
Mobile users used their mobile phones to get information in the following categories (from most to least popular):
- News/Current events: 40 percent
- Weather: 27 percent
- Sports: 9 percent
- Business/Finance: 6 percent
- Entertainment: 5 percent
- Politics: 3 percent
Apart from using their mobiles to access news and information, 69 percent of mobile users said they had used their mobile device at least once over the past 12 months to buy something. The same percentage view their mobile device as second only to desktop PCs as their preferred technology for buying products in 2011.
