Mobile Phone Usage: Social Media, Texting and Web Browsing on The Rise

When it comes to mobile content usage, by far the most popular activity among U.S. mobile phone users is texting (65.2 percent), followed by browsing the web (31.9 percent) and using downloaded apps (30 percent).

These are the findings of comScore’s analysis of mobile content usage in May 2010 (based on a three month average). Mobile users increased their mobile content usage across the board, with accessing social networks and blogs, using their web browsers, and using downloaded apps, all seeing significant growth in popularity.

Here are the most popular mobile content activities, along with their percentage point changes from February to May 2010:

  1. Sending text messages to another phone: 65.2 percent (+1.4 percentage points)
  2. Using browser: 31.9 percent (+2.3)
  3. Using downloaded apps: 30.0 percent (+2.1)
  4. Playing games: 22.5 percent (+0.7)
  5. Accessing social networking site or blog: 20.8 percent (+2.6)
  6. Listening to music on mobile phone: 14.3 percent (+1.2)
