By Anna Johnson on June 18th, 2009

Research by comScore, Inc. shows that the number of people in the U.S. who sought local information on a mobile device grew by 51 percent between March 2008 and March 2009.

March 2009 saw 32.5 million users look for local information on their mobile phones. Most people – some 20.7 million – used a web browser to find local information, 34 percent more than the 15.4 million who accessed the web from their mobile devices via a web browser in March 2008.

The biggest growth in terms of the type of access method used, however, was via applications downloaded to people’s mobile phones. 11.3 million used downloaded applications to access local information, 83 percent more than the 6.2 million using downloaded applications a year before.

Online directories, restaurants, maps and movies all saw substantial growth in terms of the types of categories people accessed via mobile phone.
