Mobile Applications To Skyrocket in 2010

By Anna Johnson on February 1st, 2010

eMarketer reports that more mobile applications will hit the market in 2010, based on a report from DM2PRO and Quattro Wireless.

A good portion of mobile app development will probably be due to marketers and developers shifting their attention away from social network applications – the development of which is expected to stall in the coming year – to mobile apps.

According to the DM2PRO and Quattro Wireless report, less than 50 percent of marketers created either a mobile or social app in 2009, but most intend to invest in a mobile app this year. They will predominately focus efforts on developing for the iPhone platform, with Android as their second choice.

All of which means we can expect the number of mobile apps to skyrocket in 2010. And if the 80-20 rules applies:

  • 20 percent of mobile apps will be innovative, useful apps that add value to people’s lives… and 80 percent will be rubbish;
  • 20 percent will be downloaded or purchased… 80 percent will go unnoticed and be an investment wasted; and
  • There is no necessary relationship between the 20 percent of quality apps, and the 20 percent of mobile apps that get downloaded!

In fact, with more big companies entering the mobile app development space, you can bet that many average apps will be helped along by big bucks. Which means that, in this much more crowded mobile app arena, Internet marketers who don’t have big marketing budgets will probably need to get creative in order to compete against large corporations.

Of course, my big tip is to forget about developing a proprietary app and, instead, create a web based mobile ‘app’ that can be accessed via a mobile browser from any smartphone using any mobile platform…
