According to comScore, Inc. data, Google’s Android mobile operating system is now used by 21.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers and is set to overtake Apple’s iPhone by the end of the year.

In the third quarter ended September 30, 2010 Android’s market share rose by 6.5 percent. Android is fast catching up to RIM whose BlackBerry platform has a 37.3 percent market share and Apple, whose iPhone operating system has a 24.3 percent share.

Android is likely to usurp the iPhone by the end of the year, whilst BlackBerry’s market leadership is set to fall as its strongest customer base – large corporations – abandon it for the iPhone and Android platforms.

Microsoft accounted for 10.0 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.2 percent.

Overall, more and more mobile phone users opted for smartphones over ‘feature phones’ during the last three months. 58.7 million people in the U.S. had smartphones in the last quarter – 15 percent more than in the previous quarter.
