Kindle for iPad: If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em

By Anna Johnson on March 30th, 2010

Amazon is releasing a free Kindle App for tablet computers, including the Apple iPad that will give tablet PC owners access to more than 450,000 Kindle books (fewer for non-U.S. customers).

Smart move Amazon: if you can’t beat Apple on the hardware front, you still have the opportunity to infiltrate on the software and ecommerce front. (And, of course, we shouldn’t rule out Amazon when it comes to the hardware just yet…)

Kindle for tablet computers will include the Whispersync technology that automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across all Kindle and Kindle compatible devices (PC, Mac, iPhone and BlackBerry) and also features a stunning user interface that fits the size, look, and feel of your tablet computer.

You’ll also be able to customize the background color and font size to ease eye strain, adjust screen brightness from within the app to make reading easier, and choose either page turn animation that replicates the look of turning a page in a book or a basic reading mode.
