Is Your Email Bounce Rate Too High?

By Anna Johnson on February 9th, 2010

Your email bounce rate reflects the proportion of email messages that go undelivered because the addresses either don’t exist or belong to closed accounts.

Silverpop’s 2009 analysis of 7,000 emails sent by email marketers from a range of industries and countries indicates what are acceptable and unacceptable bounce rates:

Bounce Rate:

  • Average 5.50 percent
  • Median 2.40 percent
  • Top Quartile 1.20 percent
  • Bottom Quartile 5.40 percent

If your bounce rate is too high it probably means you need to clean your list by removing non-existent or closed email addresses.
