iPhone Has Biggest Share of Smartphone Traffic
By Anna Johnson on May 28th, 2009Data from AdMob, the world’s biggest seller of ads on mobile based applications and websites, shows that Apple’s iPhone had the biggest share of smartphone traffic in both the U.S. and the world in April 2009.
Apple had a 59 percent share of U.S. smartphone traffic in April 2009, and 43 percent of mobile web traffic worldwide.
In addition, 27 percent of all AdMob ads displayed on mobile devices in 160 countries were displayed on iPhone or iPod Touch devices – that’s 2 billion out of a total of 7.5 billion.
Interestingly, while the iPhone operating system had just an 8 percent global smartphone share, it generated 43 percent of mobile web requests and 65 percent of HTML usage.
So what do these findings mean?
My main take-out is that Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users are using their devices as full-featured content devices, not just telecommunications devices (acknowledging that the iPod Touch is not a mobile phone). That’s understandable – the iPhone has never been just a phone.
But these results are also indicators that the iPhone’s smartphone market share is probably set to substantially increase. As more people expect their mobile devices to do more, they’ll be looking for the kinds of features and benefits offered by the iPhone.
Who else is delivering similar features and benefits? Who else gives its customers around 30,000 apps to choose from?
