Internet Explorer Down 11.4 Percent Share Since March 2009

By Anna Johnson on July 8th, 2009

Data from Statcounter indicates that in just the three months since March 2009, Internet Explorer (including IE8, IE7 and IE6) has lost 11.4 percent share of the web browser market to competing web browsers.

While IE8 usage grew during the period to reach a 16.7 percent share by the beginning of July 2009, its growth seems to have come from IE7 users switching to the new version. During the same period, IE7 went from having a 49.1 percent share to a 30.1 percent share.

According to Statcounter, IE now holds a 54.4 percent share of the browser market, considerably down from its 65.8 percent share in March.

It seems that Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome are mainly to blame for eroding IE’s share. Firefox 3.0 now has a 27.6 percent market share, while Safari has 4 percent and Chrome has 2 percent. There is no data for Firefox 3.5 which was released on June 30, 2009.

I’m with TechCrunch’s Erick Schonfeld when he says that while it’s not yet clear which browser will end up leading the field this year, the good news is that we will finally see the end of IE6. Who else is tired of hiring CSS coders to make sure their websites work in IE6?

(If you still use IE6, please upgrade…)
