If You Were a Real Estate Agent Would You Do The Following…?

By Anna Johnson on November 18th, 2009

Recently my husband contacted a real estate agent about a property we were interested in looking at, with a view to possibly purchasing.

The property was being advertised on a well-known real estate website here in Australia and he duly emailed the agent about the possibility of inspecting the property.

The real estate agent’s response? Someone else had already put a deposit on the property.

Hmmm. Did the real estate agent go on to ask my husband about what he was looking for?

Did the real estate invite my husband to consider some other properties?

Did the real estate agent ask for my husband’s phone number so she could give him a call?

No, no and no.

The real estate agent – no doubt living from commission to commission – simply addressed my husband’s question without, it seems, realizing that she had a potential client within her grasp.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Most sales people – I would have thought most commission-hungry real estate sales people – know that a prospect who contacts YOU (as opposed to you chasing them) is the best prospect of all. After all, you didn’t spend anything to convince them to approach you and, moreover, they WANT you to help them.

If it isn’t always obvious, let’s all try to be a bit more aware when we have prospects knocking at our doors, wanting to do business with us.

As for my husband and I, we’ve moved on to find real estate agents who want our business…
