idealab Launches TweetUp as The ‘Adwords / Adsense For Twitter’
By Anna Johnson on April 14th, 2010idealab – a company whose business model is to come up with, and ‘incubate’ new businesses – has launched TweetUp. TweetUp is a Twitter search engine and advertising platform in one, which TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington has dubbed ‘Google Adsense for Twitter’. Well, that was before Twitter announced its own Google Adwords / Adsense for Twitter!
You can read about Twitter’s Promoted Tweets advertising program here. In the meantime, TweetUp seems similar and, if anything, more advanced than Twitter’s program. After looking at both, it’s plausible for Internet marketers to incorporate both into their search marketing strategy.
TweetUp comprises: the TweetUp search engine, which, based on its proprietary algorithm, will display the most relevant tweets for a given keyword search; a TweetUp feed that can be integrated on third party sites; and a platform advertisers can use to bid on and place keyword based tweets in the TweetUp search results.
To be specific, the TweetUp search engine will rank and display Twitter results according to keyword relevance, whilst also allowing advertisers to pay to have their tweets included in the search stream. Third party publishers can embed TweetUp on their sites and take a 50 percent share of any ad revenue earned from paid tweets.
Meanwhile, advertisers can bid for keywords based on a per impression basis, with the current minimum bid being 1 cent per impression. Eventually, TweetUp will also allow them to pay based on a ‘new follower’ or ‘click through’ basis.
Right now, TweetUp is offering a $100 credit to the first 1,000 advertisers to join TweetUp.
