How Will Google’s Latest Updates Affect Internet Marketers?

By Anna Johnson on March 3rd, 2009

According to Aaron Wall, recent and upcoming changes to Google’s search engine algorithms will favor brands, all else being equal.

Aaron Wall points to comments made by Google CEO Eric Schmidt who, in the last 6 months, has indicated that Google is increasingly relying on ‘brands’ and ‘word relationships’ to deliver better search results.

According to Aaron, Mr Schmidt recently said that brands were part of the ‘solution’ in terms of helping Google sort out the ‘cesspool’ of false information on the Internet.

Furthermore, on a recent earnings call, Mr Schmidt indicated that Google was about to roll out a lot of discoveries in the area of understanding the meaning of a person’s search phrase. Google will, it seems, be integrating a semantic element into its search engine.

The implication of Google’s ‘brand favoritism’ is that Internet marketers will be per se disadvantaged when competing against well established brands.

That’s no reason to give up, of course. Not by a long shot. It may, however, be reason to build a brand!
