How To Track The Most Popular Links on Twitter in Real Time

By Anna Johnson on April 30th, 2009

The promise of Tweetmeme is simple: to track and display the most popular links on Twitter every 5 minutes. So if you want to know what links (i.e. links to websites) are being tweeted about the most, you’ll find Tweetmeme invaluable.

Essentially, Tweetmeme aggregates all the popular links on Twitter to determine which links are popular. It then analyses, organizes, categorizes and streams those links on the Tweetmeme site in order of popularity.

Tweetmeme also lists the most popular links in the last 24 hours and, alternatively, in the 7 days. Each tweet listed by Tweetmeme also features a ‘retweet’ button which allows people to retweet the item to their own followers.

Tweetmeme is not just another way to keep tabs on the ‘Twittersphere’ but is also a means by which you can see what external news stories, websites, etc are ‘hot’ – at least among Twitter users.

And while the top tweets include a fair number of banal tweets from celebrities who obviously don’t have anything more profound to share (Kim Kardashian changing their hair color came up tops at the time of writing) it’s fascinating to see just what topics are attracting people’s interest.
