How To Perform an SEO Website Audit In an Hour Or Less

By Anna Johnson on August 17th, 2009

According to Eric Enge you can perform a quick search engine optimization website audit in just 60 minutes.

It’s no substitute for a thorough baseline analysis (something we offer here at Kikabink) but it’s a good procedure for addressing any glaring problems BEFORE you hire an SEO professional to help you.

Erick explains the 10-step process in his Search Engine Watch article (link below), but in summary he recommends logging into Google Webmaster Tools and your web analytics tool, and proceeding through these steps:

  1. Establish when the site underwent its last major re-design
  2. Find out how many webpages are indexed by Google
  3. Examine the information architecture of the site
  4. Use a tool to go through the site
  5. Identify any duplicate content
  6. See how much content there is on each page
  7. Find any pages containing ‘template content’
  8. Review the use of title tags and H1 tags
  9. Examine the XML sitemap file
  10. Check the robots.txt file
  11. Check any redirects you have in place
