How To Optimize Your Videos

By Anna Johnson on June 6th, 2009

Rebecca Appleton has written a great piece in the Search Engine Standard outlining seven tips for successful video optimization.

In this context, optimization means both optimizing video content for the search engines and for a marketing benefit in general.

Rebecca explains how to optimize videos in her article. In summary, if you’re using videos to promote your products or services, the main things to keep in mind are as follows:

  1. Ensure your video is relevant and fits into the overall theme of your site.
  2. Use inspiring titles to attract visitors, including search engines (hint: use keywords).
  3. Use relevant tags to attract those who search for videos on video sharing sites.
  4. Use readable, keyword-rich file names.
  5. Include a text transcript of your video on the same webpage as the video.
  6. Share your video – use it in blogs, submit it to social bookmark sites, etc.
  7. Let visitors comment on, or vote for, your video to encourage a viral effect.
