How To Get Media Attention Online

Public relations and marketing firm, Arketi Group, has found that journalists are highly Internet savvy and increasingly using the Internet to find news stories.

The 2009 Arketi Web Watch Survey reveals that 88 percent of journalists spend 20 or more hours a week on the Internet, with 85 percent having a LinkedIn account, 55 percent on Facebook and 24 percent on Twitter.

92 percent of journalists say they get story ideas from news releases, 85 percent turn to industry sources, and another 85 percent seek stories from PR contacts. 12 percent have used Twitter to find a source or story idea.

Meanwhile, journalists readily discount companies without a website, with 80 percent of journalists regarding companies without a website as less credible.

How else are you likely to catch a journalist’s attention? Well, when asked how they use the Internet:

  • 95 percent of journalists said they used search
  • 92 percent said reading news
  • 92 percent said emailing
  • 89 percent said finding story ideas
  • 87 percent said finding news sources
  • 75 percent said reading blogs
  • 64 percent said watching webinars
  • 61 percent said watching YouTube
  • 59 percent said social networks
