By Anna Johnson on May 11th, 2009

Research by Hitwise indicates that Google has increased its market share leadership in search engine usage, claiming 72.74 percent of all searches in April 2009.

The result reflects a 7 percent year-on-year increase in market share; Google had 67.9 percent of all searches in April 2008. Meanwhile, Yahoo’s share of search dropped to 16.27 percent in April 2009, a decline of 20 percent from its 20.29 percent share a year ago.

MSN’s share of search declined to 5.68 percent, down 9 percent from its 6.27 percent share last year. This was, however, slightly above its 5.5 percent share in March 2009.
